WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) May 17. The Tabor Shield, which was won by the Waitiira boys at the picnic on W'nrtara beach on March 20, was presented to the winners last night by Mr. N. A. Christiansen, who, in a short speech, said that although the Waitara Club had only a ladies' team to contend against, yet the performances of the two teams were excellent, and the Waitara team fully merited their win. fie eulogised Mr. J. Laing as an instructor, and said the Waitara team were very fortunate in having an instructor who knew all the points of the game as did Mr. laing. The challenge cup for the relay race and medals for each of the team were presented to the winners, a team from Waitara school, by the Mayor (Mr. R, Morgan), as was also the cup and medals for the tug-of-war, which was won by a team from the Waihi school. Mr. Morgan complimented the winners, and liopcd that there would be good competition for t)ie cups next year, and that the best teams would win The Seaside Society will benefit to the extent of about £4 by the social, which, although not crowded, was bright and enjoyable. The committee have to thank Miss Edwin and Mr. M. Fowler for supplying the music, and all the ladies who in any way lieiped with the social. The picture entertainment given by the Taranaki Amusements Co. on Thursday night towards the fund for erecting memorial gates to footballers who have fallen in the war, was well patronised, and. £2O was banded to the football club for that purpose. T understand that Miss Stanhope, representing the .Chautauqua movement met with success in her canvass to secure guarantors to ensure a visit of the company to the town next January. Mr. vaiiglmn has agreed to act on behalf of those interested. Mr. J_ W. Foreman, while going home nn Thursday evening, met with an accident through the front wheel of the car collapsing and causing the car to turn ■over on its side. The occupants. Mr?. Foreman, Mrs. Faull, senr., and .her granddaughter, were thrown out, but fortunately no one was seriously hurt. The mission which has been held in the Catholie Church for the last week or so will finish on Tuesday.
