CONTROLLING TRAFFIC.
VIEWS OF A CORONER. By Telegraph. —Press Association. Christehurch, Last Night. The adjourned inquest 011 G. C. Tothill, tho •■'?li-kr:ovvn seed merchant, who was killed as the result of a motor car driven by his daughter colliding with an unlighted vehicle on the night of the 3rd inst., was continued. The coroner (Mr. S. E. McCarthy) reTurned a verdict of accidental death, and added that the cart was unlighted and on the wrong side of the road, and that the car was on its right side and had lights. Ho also added the following rider: (1) The evidence discloses the need for a by-law limiting the speed at which motor-driven vehicbs can lawfully be driven in the city, the prescribed speed varying according to t.he density of the traffic; (2) tile evidence further discloses the need for legislation providing; that immediately on a traffic accident happening one or other of the persons concerned therein shall be placed under duty to notify the lnenl authority of the accident, and that some officer of the local authority shall be placed under duty to immediately repair to the scene of the accident and take note of the marks on the road caused by the accident, and accurately delineate such marks nn a. plan drawn to scale; (3) tho evidence further discloses that there is wholesale failure on the part of riders and drivers of all classes of vehicles to comply with the traffic bvrlaws, and that there does not appear to be anv adequate attempt by the local authority to control the traffic or bring offenders to baak.
