SOMES ISLAND.
A PUBLIC INQUIRY DEMANDED, By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Minister for Public Health ha.; received a letter from Mr." W. T- Young, secretary of the Federated Seamen's Union, in which that official asks for a public inquiry into the condition of the quarantine station at Somes Island. In the course of a letter Mr. Young says: "'The executive of this union has received numerous bitter complaints by members of the crew of the steamer Manuka respecting what is evidently a very shocking state of affairs existing on Somes Island as the quarantine station of this port, and in the interest of seamen and citizens generally we urgently demand that you will cause a public inquiry to be held with full power to call essential evidence." The letter contains twenty allegations, including complaints regarding the old and dilapidated condition of the hospital, the absence of accommodation for females, no resident medical officer, insufficient staff, improper arrangements for wjmreting patients and contacts and those not suffering from influenza. If an inqiiir/ is gTanted it is requested that evidence from the Manuka ba called.
