LAND FOE SOLDIERS. London, May 5. One hundred and forty seven English landlords have responded to the appeal to provide land for the settlement of ex-soldiers, offering to sell 30,000 acres. The Board of Agriculture is compulsorily acquiring an additional 0000 acres. ,—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. PREFERENCE PROPOSALS RIDICULED. London, May 3. Sir John Simon, in a speech in London, said that the preference proposals were so trumpery that it was difficult to arouse serious opposition to them, but the Liberals must resist the formula. The real fiscal lesson of the war was to adjust finance so as to prevent national bankruptcy, not to proceed with muddling nonsense about giving preference to New Zealand on musical boxes.— Aus>N.Z. LORD FRENCH'S BOOK. London, May !>. The Daily Telegraph is publishing extracts from Field-Marshal French's book of the war telling the story of the retreat after the disastrous stand of the v 2nd Army at Lc Cateau. Lord French writes: "Although Genoral Joffre was anxious to take the offensive I insisted upon th necessity of a further retreat. At a discussion by commanders at the British headquarters General Smitb-Dorien opined that the only course was to return to the base, re-embark, and try to land at some favorable point on the coast. I refused to listen to what was equivalent to a counsel of despair."—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Asm.
