ON PACIFIC ISLAND. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, April 28. The French cruiser Kersaint, which was "reported a few weeks ago to have gone on a reef near Papeete, was still fast when the Paloona passed the locality on the 14th inst. . On her way from Wellington to San Francisco the Paioona received a wireless call for assistance, when she was within 16 hours of reaching Papeete. The Paloona altered her course and went to Papatoai Boorea Island, whore the Kersaint was aground on a reef some 20 miles from Papeete The warship was entering Papatoai when she caught on the very end. of the reef. The Paloona towed at the Kersaint for about seven hours, but without success, so resumed her way. The Flora then endeavored to haul the Frenchman off, but was unable to move her. When the Paloona was at Papeete on the return trip to Wellington the Kersaint was being lightered', coal, guns, etc., being unloaded, with the hope of 6kiddmg the vessel sidewards off the reef. An American expert then had charge of the undertaking, which many believed would be successful.
