SPORTS AT EAST END.

SMART ROAD FREEZING WORKS GATHERING. The initial sports organised by the workers employed at the Smart Road Freezing Works were held at the East End Reserve on Saturday, and proved very enjoyable. A long and varied programme was drawn up for decision, and troin 11 a.m. to £| p.m. interest never flagged. The attendance was exceptionally good, and if the committee decides to hold the next gathering in February the sportß should prove more attractive, as swimming events on Saturday were not popular, and the high wind at times was decidedly unpleasant. The presence of the Citizens' Band added greatly to the pleasure of the gathering. Another feature of the programme was the dancing events, Mr. Roderick Mcßae, one of the judges, being of opinion that the stepping of the Wellington lassie, Jean Main, was equal to the best he had seen. The veteran Stratford piper, Mr. J. Wade, piped for the dancers, and also contributed a few bagpipe selections that warmed the hearts of the sons of Scotland present. The secretary (Mr. A. B. Hope), committee (Messrs. A. Warner, P. Clancy, C. Gallagher, J. McLelland, J. S. Copland, A. Mason, J. Burr and A. Vardley), bellman (W. Simpson) and treasurer (J. O'Toole) are to be commended for the very complete arrangements made. The organisers are grateful to many friends for assistance, particularly Mr. Milne (manager of the works), who donated the sheep for guessing competition and timber for the dancing platform. Bary) then gave aa exhibition dance, the sum of 30s being collected and handed over to the school committees for the cocoa fund.
