ON THE SEA.
U BOAT OPERATIONS. | BASE COMMANDER'S STATEMENT. Received April 20, 5.5 p.m. New York, April 12. The Chicago Tribune's Berlin correspondent interviewed Captain Bartcnbacht, commander of the U-boat bancs ■•in Flanders, who said that Captain fichweiger sank the Lusitania, and Captain Berger sank the Laconia, botli being killed when their submarines were later destroyed. The U-boats operating off the American coast were not accompanied by a mother ship, nor did they receive aid from American shores. For one U-boat that was sunk by a depth charge three were sunk by anchored mines. The British raids on Ostend and Zeebrugge did not block the channels for U-boats. It was an anchored mine that sank the Hampshire, with Lord Kitchener aboard.—Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assoc.
