OPEN REBELLION EXISTS. RIOTERS LOSE HEAVILY. Received April 20, 5.5 p.m. London, April 15. The Press Bureau reports that Amritsar and Lahore are quiet. Twelve important arrests have been made. Open rebellion exists between theße places, where the military is taking action. Bombay and Ahmdabad are quiet. A serious disturbance occurred at Veiramgaui, and several buildings wecr destroyed.
The rioters' losses at Ahmda'bad were heavy. Business has been suspended in Calcutta till April 22. The mob were violent, and the military was called out. The mob stoned a picket, who fired on the crowd, killing six and wounding twelve. The Mohammedans and Marwaris fraternised, and Hindus were admitted to the mosque.—An*, and NJ2. ORDER BEING RESTORED. SERIOUS RIOTS AND BURNINGS. AGITATORS BEING DEPORTED. Received April 20, 11.50 p.m. London, April 18. Government reports from India state that the shops are re-opening at Lahore and Amritsar. Several agitators were arrested, some being deported. The railway station at Gujranwala, 42 miles northward of Lahore, was burned, the staff injured, and the line damaged. Martial law was extended during the riots.
Fifty Sepoys faced a mob of 5000 and dispersed it by firing The situation in Delhi, Bombay City and Calcutta is quiet. In the Ahmedabad district Ghandi appealed to crowded meetings on the 14th to forswear violence.
Two outlying police posts were burned, and the treasury at Virangam, about 40 miles west of Ahmedabad, looted.
Strikes are threatened on two railways, and Punjab communications are seriously threatened.
Other official reports state that serious riots broke out in Amritsar following the removal of Kiohlu and Satyapal, two virulent agitators. Two banks in Townsville were burned, and three bank managers burned to death. Five Europeans were killed. During the rioting nine rioters were killed and twenty-one injured. Troops were sent and order has now been re stored. Disturbances also occurred at Lahore and Ahmedabad, two Government buildings being burned in the latter. Bcmbay is disturbed, several persons being injured on the 12th. The mob's temper is bad, but Ghandi's return, on the vhole, had a tranquillising effect Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assoc, and Reuter.
