WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent). April 17, 1919.
Waitara lost one of hev oldest settlers on Monday night in the person of Mrs. T. Bayly, vlio died at the advanced age of 85. She had been ailing for some time, but old residents well remember her as a very active supporter of any movement for the benefit of the town. She brought up a large family and will be deeply regretted by numerous friends. The cleaning up of the town has proved a much bigger contract than the inspector bargained for when it was started, loads having been taken away up to last night. There is no doubt if this were done (say) twice a year the town would be very much better for it.
A slight accident happened to one of the barges while being towed into the river last night. She was thrown against the wall by the sea and damaged so that she had to be overhauled and repaired. No candidates have as yet appeared for the mayoralty nor for the position of councillors, and while there is plenty of time yet, as nominations do not close until the 24th inst. yet from what one can hear very little interest is being taken in it. The borough finances are at a very low ebb and now is the time for energetic men to get on the Council and straighten things out. From what one can see it will undoubtedly be necessary to raise a loan to put the electric light on a sound footing, and it would at the same time be a sound proposition to borrow to put in drainage and put down new roads instead of trying to do all these things out of revenue and paying high rates of interest on overdraft.
