At Saturday's meeting of the County Council the chairman (Cr. Belcher) remarked that further enquiries were being made in regard to the hydro-electric scheme for Taranaki, and with Mr. Forsyth, chairman of directors, he had been appointed a delegate to represent the Eltham Dairy Company at a meeting. In the discussion that followed Cr. Carter Btated that Sir Wm. Fraser had expressed the opinion that the Government scheme would be complete within four or four and a half years. He would not say much, but Sir William was an elderly gentleman, and an election was pending, so that politics may take an entirely different trend. Against that this province was more than ever in need of some cheap power for working machinery and farms. Cr. McWilliam agreed that every effort should be made to push forward any scheme, whether provincial or Government, and moved that Cr. McGuinness and the engineer (Mr. Tosswill) .attend the next meeting. "Blackberries are getting a hold in South Taranaki. On the Skeet Road there are bushes as big as the room," remarked Councillor Carter at the Eltham. County Council meeting on Saturday. "People are to be seen gathering the berries off the roadside, and filling buckets. Land is far too valuable to permit the blackberry to obtain a hold, and the attention of the Hawera County Council should be drawn to the matter. There arc plenty of other weeds that require attention ragwort and Californian thistle—and if something is not done shortly we will be severely penalised." A motion was subsequently carried directing Hawera County Council to the existence of the weed on the Skeet Road.
