NEW PLYMOUTH BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MEETING OF WORKS COMMITTEE. The Works Committee of the New Plymouth Borough Council met lost night, there being present the Mayor (Mr 0. H. Burgess), Crs. J. Clwke, J. W. HajMen, W. F. Short, E. Griffiths, R. .T. Deare, G. W. Browne. The Taranaki Jockey Club wrote stating that provided the whole of the work (as outlined in the council's scheme) was completed by next Christmas, the clnb would contribute £l5O per annum for three years, towards the improvement of the Gover Street hill approach to the racecourse. Messrs W. D- and E. P. Webster wrote with respect to the extra water charge on Kurta's, Devon Street, fish shop premises, which was paid under protest, as the rate was considered absolutely excessive. They thought peTha.ps it had been assessed in error, as there was really a trifling amount of water used, and some being for cleansing purposes. It waa stated that both the writers and TCurta were heavy ratepayers and paid the general water rate. They therefore asked for a refund of the amount.

The engineer reported that although there were four points it had been arranged to charge as for three only, as the points for the f nun In in were Bmn.ll. aivl on account of the shop bein» shut for a day and a half oven- week, the rate being 10/- per point. He siid a meter could ho installed but did not think tO fine a meter as would ntearure half a gallon per minute would prove satisfactory, and that was the amount estimated as used by the three point*.

It was decided to take no action but to forward a copy of the enpinecf's report to the writers of the letter.

Permission was given to J. W Kurta to erect a glass sign under the -verandah at his Devon Street shop, subject to conformity of the sign with the by-Jaws.
