TARATA DOG TRIALS.

A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. The twelfth annual dog trials held under the auspices of the Tarata Club took place on Thursday and Friday at Mr. K. Patetson's homestead. The attendance was good on both days. Entries were not quite as good as last year, owing to the date clashing with Hawkc's Bay Show, which accounted for the absence of Messrs. J. It. Corrigan, Tocker and Scot. The sport on the whole was good, though the work in the lmntaway was disappointing. The sheep, which were provided by Mr. T. Hogan, proved at times somewhat difficult for the dogs to handle. A feature of the meeting was the success achioved by Mr. H. Lambert, who scored a first, fbur seconds, two thirds and a fourth, besides annexing sevoral special prizes. His win was very popular, as he has been a keen member of the" club for over ten years, and has at tmies given up his chances of winning in order to act as judge for the club at a moment's notice. His success was particularly gratifying as it was achieved mainly with dogs that he had bred himself from a valuable dog secured from the North Hope kennels a year ago. Two of his daughters also were first and second In the ladles' competition, and the work of the winner was greatly admired by the judge, who considered it far superior to that of tho majority of the male competitors. Tho arrangements for the gathering were excellent, and reflected great credit on the committee—Messrs. Staudish, Lambert, Drummond, George, Morey, O'Reilly and Topping. The various officials all did their work well, particularly the sheep stewards (Messrs. S. George, J. Drummond and O'Reilly), the mounted steward (D. Lambert), flag steward (H. Lambert) and dog steward (H. Lambert). Mr. J, Scott who acted as judge, in the unavoidable absence of C. S. Hay, of Mastertou, gave general satisfaction. Mr. W. Topping, the secretary, as usual had every detail perfect, while Mr. H. Sander ably filled the position of president. The catering was in the capable hands of Miss Guildford. Sheep guessing competitions were held each day, Mr. K. J. Morey having charge of this department. On the first day Mrs. Rennell, Miss Edna Ible, Messrs. J, Drummond and Hurli guessed the correct weight (671bs) and share I the prize. Results of the trials are as follow: . Head, Pull and Hold in Ring; about 300 yards; time, 10 minutes.
