WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) March 8. The dance held by the ladies in the Clifton Hp.ll, the net proceeds Mug given to the g-a:-ide Improvement Society, was vuiy successful, and the young ladies, Misses M. Jenkins, 0Brabant. M. Foreman, Langman (2), and B. Taylor, deserve great credit for the trouble taken. The Society's- funds have benefited to the extent of £2 18s 6d. The s.s. Matatua concluded its loading yesterday evening and sailed this morning. A meeting of the sports committee for peace celebrations met last evening, when a comprehensive programme of sports was drawn up. The Misses Purdie, who have been in the drapery business in Waitara for several years, have sold out their business to Mr John Parry, of Auckland. We trust that the "Misses Purdie will not be leaving the town, as they have always been moat willing to assist in anything got up to improve it, and their going would be a distinct loss. It has been suggested that a monster opeu air picture entertainment should be given on the camp reser|£ as one of the items of the peace celebrations.

Word has been received that Master G. E. Arms, who sat for the university entrance examination in January last, has come out top of the list for Taranaki. This entitles him to a Taranaki scholarship, of which he will take advantage by attending the Wellington university to study medicine. Some time ago the Mayor (Mr R. Morgan) promised two prizes of 10s each to the 6th and 7th boy or girl in Standard V. The committee could not agree as to how the prizes were to be allotted, which held the matter up for some time. Now, however, the prizes have been allotted, the recipients being Carol Wakely and Keu McGonagle.
