A Tokio wdle reports the death of Count Ukushima. A Washington message states that President Wilson is returning to Franca on Match S. Mrs C. Roch has received word that her son Private C. W. Koch will be returning home soon. He will arrive in Auckland about March 5. At the Presbyterian Assembly the Kev. J. A- A slier, Napier, was elected moderator designate for next assembly. —Press Assn. Lieut. F. J. Easther, formerly of the National Bank staff in New Plymouth, is returning by the Zealandic, due on February 23 at Wellington.

A New York cable records tiie death, at Wfttortown, New York, of Doctor Mary Walker, the only woman allowed to wear male attire, by a special Act of Congress. The Rev. W. A. Sinclair, Messrs C. E. Hellrmger and J. T. Grift'en, are leaving this morning for Christchurch to attend the annual conference of the Methodist Church.

Mr \v. T. Jennings, MP. for Taranaki, who lias been on a tour througii the King Country with &ir Willliam F/aser, Minister of Public Works, returned to New Plymouth by the mail train on Saturday night.

Mrs R. (fiddv has received adviae that Rifleman R. W. Giddy is returning to New Zealand with returning draft No. '2lO, on H.M.T. Port Melbourne, which is due to arrive at Auckland on or about March 5. 1919. Mr W. E. Searle, of Oamaru, lias received cable advice that his son, Lieut. Tf. V. Roarle, has gained a Cambridge University scholarship', and will continue his studies there till March, 1920. Lient. Searle, who received his education at the Oamaru South and Waitaki High Schools, after taking his M.Sc. decree at Otago University, received an appointment on the staff of the New Plymouth High School. He left New Zealand with the 20th Reinforcements for active service.
