DISTRICT NEWS.
MIDHIRST. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A welcome home concert and dance was held in the Town Hall on the 18th inst., in honor of Troopers A. Keighley and E. Goodwin and Rifleman H. Rowe. There was a very large attendance of the public, who accorded the returned soldiers a hearty welcome and thoroughly appreciated the concert programme, which was of high order throughout. Amongst the visiting performers Mr Vinsen, of Stratford, was, as usual, a great favorite; Mr Lovell, New Plymouth, fairly brought down the house with his comic songs; and the duets by ■ the Misses Moon and Sullivan (Strat- j ford) were much appreciated. Our local \ performers, Miss Anderson, Mesdames Carter, Tapp, Bennett, Hatcher, and the Misses Martin, Fever, Lois Kivell, Dnlcie Taylor, Huse, and Messrs Biley and I.mnell, were in their best form and encores were the order of the evening. Illuminated adresses were presented by the chairman (Mr Harkness), who spoke in appreciative terms of the guests of the evening, who. on mounting the stage, were enthusiastically received by the audience and accorded musical honors and cheers. Rifleman Rowe, on Mialf of his comrade?, thanked the Midhirst people for their presentation and kiwi welcome. The supper arrangement.-, I which were under the management of a : specially selected committee, were all that eouid be desired and favorable comments were numerous. The concert, which was concluded with a hearty rendering of the National Anthem, was followed by a dance. The temperature was rather high, but nevertheless the floor being in good order and the music excellent the votaries of the tcrpsiehorean art had a really good time. Messrs Shotter and Carter were M.C.'s, and Miss Huae provided dance music, i&tras being contributed by Miss Anderson and Mr Jack Stephenson. The splendid stretch of tar macadam road that now extends through Midhirst Is somewhat tempting to the motorists, but they will be well advised not to exceed the speed limits inside the borough boundaries, and will be well rewarded in having a better opportunity of viewing the architectural and other beauties )f the town. RAHOTU. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The Church of England harvest concert was the best held here, everyone being in splendid form. Bidding for the gifts was very brisk, and £l3 resulted. Tea wjis -dispensed from a sijt.lt and earned £1 12s. The doortakings were £3 10s and dance 9s. The Kahui road people subscribed £2 13s towards the affair, anil in one way and another after expenses are paid £lB 19e will be cleared. Mrs A. Phillips had the misfortune to cut off the top of her finger by letting a window down upon it. At a welcome home, which took the j'form of pictures and a dance, several i soldiers were presented with gold [ medals in honor of having given their j services for the country. _Mrs Tyrell has returned from a short visit to Wangaimi, her sister, Miss Hopkins, staying longer. Mrs G. Hopkins is looking forward to the return of her husband, Limcecorporal Hopkins, who was expected on the 10th. Messrs T. P. Huglison and Sons, our worthy storekeepers, have started in a very large way at Opunake, Mid shut up their Oaonui business. ■• Messrs A. Chapman and W, Harrison have both purchased fine new cars.
