WEST END SCHOOL
PROPOSED EXCHANGE OF SITES. In connection with the proposed exchange of sites with a view to having a new and up-to-date school erected on a portion of the resorve adjoining Western Park, facing Cutfield road, a deputation from the Taranaki Education Board, consisting of Messrs R. Masters (chairman), S..G..Smith, M,P„ H. Trimble and P. J. White, waited on the New Plymouth Borough Council on Wednesday to further urge that the Council consent to the exchange on the basis of the Minister of Lands' undertaking. Mr Masters acted as spokesman, and while regretting the re-appearance of the Board before the Council on the matter in question, admitted that the position that had arisen was largely file fault of the Board, and they regretted it. They now hud the assurance, of the Minister of Lands and the governing Board, that the rights to Itatokftrg, Domain and the Katapihipihi Reserve would,be vested in the Borough Council for all time, without periodic revision provided that no alteration, v/as made from the original purpose for which the areas were' constituted scenic reserves. If the Borough would consent to and accept that, which was practically equivalent 1q the freehold, he was quite suro it would be in the interests of the Board, the children and the district generally Ho hoped he Cetaieil would now meet the Board in this matter and that the exchange would be effected. H$ WAS quite clear in his own mind as to the intention of the Minister with re.' gnrd to the control of the reserves mentioned, and that if agreed to by the Council the necessary legislation to ratify Hie agreement would be passed ia the next spssioa of Parliament. Messrs Smith and White also supplemented the chairman's remarks, the former expressing an opinion that if the sjtfl was secured the Department would not delay . the erection of a school building very long as had been suggested. Cr Collis explained ths point of view of the Scenic Unserves Board-, who had agreed fcc, make no objection, to the propped exchange. The Mayor said he did not feel disposed to give a definite reply to the deputation at once. Personally he woidd like to give a little further consideration to. the matter, and moreover, $s there were three Councillors absent h.e thought it should be deferred until i ni?v\(( Monday w>th a view, io havißg' a 1 full Council;j flhairman of the Boafd thanked Uhe Council frr t»»»vu>w, which then withdrew.
