A meeting of the Fire Brigade was hold on Friday night to make arrangements to further the object of getting tha proposal to form a fire district carried at the poll to be taken on January 31. A committee, consisting of Captain Frost, J. Canton,. B Mtirgatroyd, Lieutenant G McGrath, and T Buchanan, was appointed to go into the matter. A two years' service medal was given to Fireman | Canton, who has completed seven years' service A three years' service certificate is due to Fireman Hayward, and a similar one will bs duo to Lieutenant, MeGrath on Monday next Mrs J Soffe, of this town, has received word from the Minister for Defence that her son, Private G. Soife, has been awarded the Military Medal for conspicuous'gallantry on the field of battle. We congratulate Mr. and Mrs. Soffe on the achievement of their son, who has been at the front for over three years. Private H. Soffe is expected to arrive in New Zealand on January 27 ! A meeting to consider the formation j of a co-operative bakery was held on Friday night, when there was a fair attendance It was stated that sufficient capital had been promised to make a start. A committee, consisting of Messrs T Taylor, C. Hallam, Ii Oldham. G. Koberts, If Fowler, and two others, was appointed to go into the linr.r.ciul aspect of the affair, and a meeting was called for Friday evening next to consider their report and decide definitely what steps to take.
