HAWERA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
Potato crops look particularly good in this district, and if the growth under the soil is up to that on the top there should bo heavy yields this year. The blight is said to have aflectcd some patches, but those I have seen are free and well forward.
From Stratford to Hawera ploughing seems to be universal, and the sliort spell of fine weather has seen more acres of new ground broken up, and incidentally explains the reason why certain faces familiar in High Street have been missing lately. The by-roads of Normality contain little metal, but show good growth of grass, consequently it is not surprising to find dairy herds grazing undisturbed. Perhaps the Town Hoard issues a license to graze, if -not, {he poundkeeper is misainb a harvest. Some fine haystacks are noticeable around Normanby Evidently profiting by last winter's experience, farmers are shutting up more paddocks for winter feed. Many of these stacks are quite close to the railway line, which looks like tempting providence, in view of the possible danger from railway engine sparks. A considerable amount of indignation lias been created over the "taihoa" policy of the Minister of Education regarding the Technical College, Hawera. The Mayor Will preside at an indignation meeting, to lie held on Monday evening. Mr. R. Masters, chairman of the Taranaki Education Board, will probably be present.
