ELTHAM.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Eltham, Jan. 10, Thursday has again been fixed as the weekly half-holiday for the year throughout the county. It i 3 understood that Mr. W. Carter, Hunter Road, will accept nomination for the vacancy on the County Council, vice Mr. A. Pease (resigned). Mr. Carter ia a director of the Eltham Dairy Company, and should prove a good man if given the opportunity of becoming a councillor.
Somebody will have to go on the carpet in connection with the following incident. The town water supply had been cut off. and by some means or other the water-taps in connection with Mr. E. E. Carter's business were not secured. Later on the borough turned on the Water, with the result that our dentist's premise.? soon resembled a miniature ocean, and as the water continued flowing throughout tho night the surplus from Mr. Garter's rooms (topstorey) worked down into the premises! | of Mr. Neill, draper, and by tho time the mishap was discovered considerable damage had been c-aused. Another mishap has also to be recorded. Two motcr cyclists were proceeding down one of the streets here when the second cyclist struck titrable, due to a pony. Evidently the appearance of the first motorist >ras distasteful to the animal, which promptly became very excited. The first jidw cycled past the animal, while the second man, scenting danger, slackened down, but unfortunately came in contact frith the pony's heels and the bundle-tars ot the machine. As a result the injured man had to have several stitches inserted before he could be made presentable.
Mr. J. L. Canipbeii icli on Friday foi Auckland to recuperate after having had a rather bad JwijjEffißij influenza.
