PORT DARWIN RIOTS.
BR. GEtDEUTSe EFFIGY BURNED. Brisbane, Dec. 20. Details of the Part Darwin riot show that a mob of 700, headed by a motor carrying Dr. Gilrath's effigy, marched to Government House. After listening to Dr. Gilruth they swarmed into' the grounds, broke the windows, and disarmed the police of their rifles. The efiigy ivaa then burnnd. The cause of the violence was Dr. Gilruth's refusal to depart by the next steamer.—Ana. N.Z. Cabis Assoc. Received Dec. 20, 9.30 p.m. Brisbane, Dec. 20. The trouble at Port Darwin 'lias been seething for weeks over the increased price of beer. Hotels have been 'boycotted during tho list fifteen days. During the riot firearms and bludgeons w£re freely used. Dr. Gilrutli managed to escape, after a rough handling. The town is now quiet.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Association.
