ABOLITION OF TOLL GATES.
OPPOSED BY CLIFTON COUNTY' CUNCIL. Some discussion. took place at yesterdoy's meeting of the Clifton County Council, wljeii a copy of Mr. C- A. Wilkinson's Abolition of Toll-gates Bill was laid on the council table. The deputy'chairman (Cr. Kennington) said lie was opposed to the Bill, and thought the council should express its opposition to the Bill. In this view Tie was supported by all the other councillors present, with the exception of Cr. Musker, who said ho thought toll-gates should either be abolished altogether or else erected wherever they would produce venue. Personally he was opposed to toll-gates. He thought some comprehensive scheme of classification of county districts should be effected, and adequate grants made for the maintenance of main roads. A county like Clifton was at a great disadvantage compared with other districts. They had no railways, and l.herj were large areas of Native lands which brought in no revenue. A resolution was moved by Cr Sander and seconded by Cr. Mclvenzie, that the council oppose the Bill becoming law, and that Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P- for the district, be asked to oppose it in the House.
Cr. Musker pointed out that the chairman (Cr. Pigott) and Or. Jones, who were absent, were strong opponents of tho toll-gate system, and he did not think it perhaps the thing to pass such a resolution in their absence.
Other Crs. agreed that the business of the council must bo proceeded with, and the resolution was carried.
