WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, Nov. 0 Word lias been received, that A. H. Mellar. son of Mr. G. H-~Mellar, of Waitarji, who hso been serving liis country at the front, died of wounds on October ID. His parents will have the sympathy of a large number of friends in their sad bereavement. I have also to record the death at Auckland of Mr. Hubert Hicks, =on of Mr. E. Hicks, of Tikorangi. He was well known itv Waitara, though lie has been absent for some years, having joined l!i* I'olice Force, and being stationed in Auckland, whero he contracted influenza, which proved fatal, after a short illness- Another familiar figoi-j in Waitara will also be missed in Ned PiVkere, the footballer, who has died from influenza at Narrow Neck Camp. In another column will be seen an ad.vsrtiaemcnt of tlio gale of Mr. C. Hallam's iurniture and effects. I regret to say that Mr- Hallam is leaving the town, having been promoted to take charge of the Now Zealand Shipping Company's store at Auckland. Ht> nas made himself very popular since taking charge of the wool store "here, and he will be very much misssed. As secretary of the Patriotic League, his place will be hard to fill, as he hab devoted a great deal of time and energy to this work. Mr- Hallam, as chairman of the society, has taken * ikeert interest in surf bathing and seaside improvement since its inception four years ago, and has 'been one of Its most energetic workers. We wish Mr. Hallam every success in his new sphere of action. The Oth of November (Guy Fawkes Day) was celebrated here -with rather more noise than usual, a bonfire or two and plenty of rockets and crackers helpin" to keen things lively. The influenza epidemic lifts visited Waitara, there being several cases in the town at present, though none, 4 believe, are in a virulent form. A meeting of business peopls and employers of labor is called for Friday night to consider what holidays are to he kept, and what form the celebrations axe to take when' -peace is declared. This should be a step in the right direction, as it is useless to wait until peace is declared beforo taking steps ia that direction.
