OPENING OP IHTZROY GEEEN. Despite the very unfavorable weather yesterday afternoon, there was a large attendance at the formal opening of the Fitzroy green for the season. In the absence of the president (Mr. Stanley Smith) the vice-president (Mr. W. Healy) did the honors of the occasion, making an appropriate speech of welcome to the visiters and expressing the hope that play during the season would be enjoyable. He referred to the banner matches being on the district system, and stated that on intervening Thursdays it was shaped to hold friendly inter-club games. He presented the Champion Cup to last season's winner, Mr. L. Oliver.'', remarking' that it was a popular victory. Brief reference was made to the Croquet dub and a hope expressed that more ladies would join, as tho lawn was in capital order, For the visitors, Mr. W. F. Brooking (president of the New Plymouth Club) returned thardes, and, after praising t'he excellent condition of the Fiteroy green, promised a hearty welcome to players visiting the town green. Cheers were given for Mr. Stanley Smith and the ladies, and Mrs, Healy then threw the jack, followed up by the delivery of a bowl, and the green was declared open. The usual game, President V, VicePresident, was started, but, owing to tine rain, had to bo abandoned for the day, 'it being arranged to invite visitors, including ladies, to be present to-morrow (Saturday) efomld the weather "be favorable.
