He was a : To Kiri iad, and muck sympathy is ex-, perienced fox- the parents, who are wellknown identities here. This is 'the second soldier irom this district within a week killed in action, Private Len. Callagiian, of Opunake, being the other. The latter was also a native of this district. Private Huston Young, who v/entaway with the Kith Reinforcements, arrived home last week. Corporal J. S. Tosland, who went from here with the Twentysevenths, also arrived home on the same date. There was a fairly big civil list, at the Court last week. In the undefended cases judgment was "ivea for plaintiffs as follow:—A. Crawford v- G. Tynan, '£Sl 13s 4d (coats £5 7s; .J. McDavitt v. J. P. Moru, £2 Gs Gd (ss); same v. Tito Wetui, £3 (£l lis); same v. Charlie Tutaou, £5 (£2 7s); same v. P. Selby, £1 Is (fills); same v. Kohi Wilson, £l3 17s Od, and J. Boyne, £5 (£2 Cs fid each); W. Gibbons v. 0. Larkin, £6 9s 3d (£1 os fid). In the judgmetn summons eases, Mr. Gow (instructed toy Roy and Nicholson) obtained orders from the following defendants:—A. 15. Magon v. W Whetu, £5 8s 4d; same v. Sukiwi, £0 ss, and Horo £e Whiti,.£S 9s 3d; P. S. Washborne v. Whare To |Poi, £llß 18a 3d; McDavitt v, Kohi Ngamare, £6 Ss; C. A. Trotter v. Joe Epai, '£lo 2s; W. R. Wright v. Mat. Coffey, £4. The case of. Police v. Papa, for allegedly acting as a land agent without a license, was dismissed, the Magistrate holding that an isolated instance was not sufficient ground for prosecution being sustained. In the ca?e Police v. C. Coffey, fori stealing three bridles from off horses when grazing in the Post' Office paddock in Rahotu, the accused pleaded guilty, and was placed under probation and ordered to pay the costs ( £1). Defendant had enlisted. In the case Arthur McKeown v. J. Twoomey, plaintiff claimed £l7 for returning a horse hayrake, borrowed by defendant, in a dam-, aged condition, was awarded £1 and no costs. There was "every indication that Opunake was to be benefited" iby a doctor from Napier taking up his residence here, but difficulties are reported to have arisen. The Opunake' Dairy Company decided to close down their creamery on Kina Road as from tile first of NovemberThe trustees elected under the Oaonui Irrigation Board are Messrs Carey, O'Rorke, Markham, Jordan, and Clegg.
