A MADMAN'S CRIME.
:j- } attack on a baby. . ■; Hamilton, Oct. 25. The police have received word of a shocking tragedy at Naike. The details are meagre, but it appears that a settler named Albert Morrine gouged out the eyes of a year-old baby girl and then ran away. Mrs. Morrine rang up Mrs. Griffin, a neighbor, who went to the house. The man returned later and endeavored to enter the house through the doors and windows. The women prevented him, and telephoned to the neighbors, who came and secured him. The police and (Dr. Martin, of Ngaruawahia, attended the child, who was brought to the Waikato Hospital. It was at first stated that the child's eyes bad bean cut out. but Dr- Joeeph thinks they were gouged out, as there are no traces of a sharp instrument having been used. Constables S. Bissett and Ingram brought the man to Huntly, where he came before the Court and was remanded to Auckland. • The mother of the' child is in a state of collapse, and cannot bo questioned. The child died in the hospital this morning.
