WAITARA.
BOROUGH COUNCIL* (From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, Oct- 12. The Borough Council met ou Wednesday night, there being present: The Mayor, Crs. Spurdie, B abant, Hallani, Jcnes, Blanehard. and Kendrick. Tho New Plymouth Council wrote agreeing to allow Mr. Day. sanitary inspector, to pay periodical visits in connection with plumbing afid sanitary work during the absence of Mr. I'tar witH the Forces, at a charge of £1 per half-day. Mr. Jamieson was appointed borough inspector, and with the combined duties oi turncock and borough foreman, is to receive a remuneration of lf>s per day. The Mayor was appointed to represent the council at the hydro-electric ennfererce to be held at Stratford ou the 17th ii'st. The council agreed to supply water to the school residence at 15s per annum. It was decided to refer the matter of complaint, of nuisance caused by the keeping of pigs within tln> borough to the public health inspector. The Fire Brigade sent a deputation, headed by Mr. T, Buchanan, and requested the council to lake the necessary steps to form a Fire Board in the bfirough. The deputation pointed out that, owing to lack of f„ni!s, the equipment was in a bad condition, and the brigade was quite unable to accept the responsibility of safeguarding property. The council was sympathetic in the matter, and at the suggestion of the brigade it was decided to arrange a special meeting, when Superintendent Bcllringer, of New Plymouth, will attei.d and. give further information as to the working of a Firo Board. Tlie acting-town clerk submitted ft statement of estimated icceipts and expenditure for the remainder of the financial year, and it was seen that .the finances of the borough are in a deplorable condition. i
GENERAL. I understand that Mr. Adamson, oi this town, who lias been the prime nigfter in the matter of sc-tting up a carbonising plant for the treatment, of seedy wool, is to attend a meeting shortly, when it is expected that final arrangements will be made to proceed with the industry. This should be of great benefit to the country, and Mr Adamson is to be congratulated on his enterprise. The Seaside Improvement Society held its sotial last night, tlnre being a fair attendance, and dancing concluded at 1 a.m. this morning. The music was supplied by Messrs M. Fowler (piano) and R A. Taylor (cornet), with extras by Miss Skelton and Mr. T. Taylor. Mr. K. Proctor was M.C. The ladies in charge of the supper arrangements were Mesdames Brabant, Spurdie, G. Nosworthy, Aubrey, Beekbess ; nger, Arms, and Blanehard. The cake inade and presented by Mrs. W. TeV'ar was won by Miss T. Mair. The fact of the children attending the Convent school being lined up and standing at attention during the passing of the funeral of the lat* Private Purdie was very favorably commented upon. It is a great pitv that the State school did not arrange similarly, instead of the children being allowed to leave school and follow indiscriminately.
