THE TRAMWAYS DEPUTE. By; Telegraph.—Press .Association. Wellington, Oct. 8. Tramway Union, shift meetings yesterday considered the agreement come to by the conference under the Conciliation Commissioned. The secretary of the union stated last night that he had nothing to report, The union's decisions have to he placed hefore the Commissionei. It is understood that the men are not in favor of the agreement. They are satisfied with the minimum rate $f Is 4d per hour, but not with the proposed overtime rates, which are bas.ed on the old rate of Is l'/jd an hour. A special meeting of the City Council at noon to-day will consider the agreement. ' .
NEW DEFENCE OFFICES. Wellington, Oct. 8. , A' project mooted some time ago is to bo realised- Owing to tho pressure of tic requirements of the Defence Department, Whitmore Street, running to Lambton Quay, between the Supremo Court and the Government Buildings, is to be closed by arrangement with the City Council., and built on. It is abroad, short street, which will give a largo building area and throw the Government edifices into one solid block.
