COMPENSATION COURT.

A WIDOW GRANTED £509. By. Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A claim for compensation was heard nc the Arbitration Court to-day, when Kliza Mary McAun claimed from the Union Steam Ship Company compensation for the death of her husband, Joseph MeAnn, a liuikkeeper, who was accidentally drtowned on July 25. The widow said she was totally dependent on the earnings of her late husband, and claimed £SOO byway of compensation, together with funeral expenses and costa. The defendant company admitted that McAnn was, on the date, ih question, in charge of the hulk Tobias, but denied that plaintiff was totally dependent on JfcAnn. In evidence, plaintiff said she lived at Hataitai ibecauso of certain family affairs which had to be attended to, but was wholly dependent on the £2 per week she received from her late husband. Mr. P. Levi, for the company, said the company inigit have raised the question as to proof of accident arising out of the course of his envplqyrnent, but It' did not wish to insist on the point. The company did not contest the case, but desired to have the judgment of the Court, because the parties had been living apart though not separated- The Court awarded plaintiff £SOO, £ls 15a funeral expenses, and £5 5s costs.
