THE GOLD INDUSTRY. Received Sept. 24, 7.33 p.m. Johannesburg, Sept. 2.1. The president of the Chamber of mines referred to the serious position of the Transvaal gold industry. Of forty-eight contributing mines, six were working at an actual loss and fifteen at a, small profit, which, however, the standing charges turned into a loss. Under existing conditions the end was very near. It would be a pity if the closing of some of the mines was required to bring home the real position.—Renter.
