The Governor-General held an investiture of the Order of the British Empire this afternoon, the recipients being: Mr. Clark (Mayor of Dunedin), Badge of the Third Class; Mesdamcs Bessland (Dunedin), Forrester (Dunedin), Hawke (Invereargill), Messrs. Stead (Mayor of Invcrcargill), Thomson (Invercargill), Badges of the Fifth Class. At the Kensington Drill Hail this evening Lord Liverpool presented the following military decorations: Military Cross to relatives of Major Horwood, Captains Morrison and Hill, Lieut. Campbell, Sec-ond-Lieutenants Morrison arid McQueen. Military Medal to the relatives of Sergeant Sinclair. D.C.M. to relatives of Corporal Lepper, Private Sainschbury. MAGISTRATE'S COURT CASES. Auckland, Last Night. Two men accused of committing the recent burglaries, and one charged with receiving, were remanded till to-morrow week. Patrick Gunn, one of the five, escaped from the police station, but was recaptured, after about an hour's chase, hiding i under a house near the Domain. ; Erne'st Mackenzie pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial on a charge of attempting to obtain £7O. from the Railway Department, by claiming, Ithrough a solicitor, for a motor cycle wrongly alleged to have been lrst in transit. Evidence for the prosecution was to the effect that the cyele had leen conj signed from Raetihi to Auckland and I checked, being obtained at Auckland without giving up the check ticket. N.Z. WAR EXPENDITURE. Wellington, Last Night, The quarterly statement of the New Zealand war expenditure shows the total amount expended to .Tune 30 as £44,162,70", or, with additions and imprests, £48,255,942. The amount of £43,078,750 has been the actual war expenditure, relief purposes have taken £233,238, and expenses of raising loans £25,711). The total on March 31 stood at £30,209,550. THE SHIPPING OUTLOOK. Wellington, Last Night. Referring to Mr. Hoover's statement regarding shipping, the Hon. D. H. Guthrie said to-day he had not received advice of the intention of the Imperial authorities to divert any ships already promised to New Zealand. The arrangements made so far extend only to the end of the year, but nothing has happened to lead the Government to suppose that thwo will be no ships after that time. On the contrary, the indications have been • that there will be' reasonable shipping available for the New Zealand trade. ,° ATTRACTING TEACHERS. Wellington, Last Night. Cabinet approved to-day of financial provision being made in order to secure an adequate supply of probationers, pupil teachers and training college students for the State schools teaching service. MESSAGES FROM SHIPS. Wellington, Last Night. The Minister of Defence has received advice from a hospital ship outside New Zealand waters that the health of the patients aboard is good. He has also been advised that the health of the right wing of the 43rd Reinforcements is excellent. SYMPATHY OF POLITICAL LEADERS. Wellington, Last Night. Sir James Allen has received the following message from Mr. Massey and Sir Joseph Ward regarding the epidemic on the New Zealand troopship: ''We are exceedingly grieved to learn of the casualties from the pneumonia epidemic. Please convey to parents and relatives of those members of the Expeditionary Force whose illness has terminated fatally our heart-felt sympathy and condolence."
