FARMERS' UNION.

Eltham, Sept, 23. Mr. B, Dawes presided at the meeting of the Kltham branch on Saturday. "Should interest be paid upon paid-up flare capital in co-operative dairy companies ?" was forwarded by the provincial executive. The question was recognised as a very important one, and it was resolved to hold a meeting at an early date lo cfiscuss it, an invitation to be extended to all farmers to attend. The sub-committee reported" on their work in connection with the blackberry menace, and it was hoped that this weed will be included in the Amending Act of the Noxious Weeds Bill for this season. The need of giving more attention to the growth of plantation and other trees was reviewed, and it was resolved to invite Mr. Maxwell, who takes considerable interest in this work ,to deliver a lecture on "Forestry" on October 11 Mr. O'Hagan wrote suggesting they should make an effort to secure the services of Mr. Mason, veterinary surgeon for the district, but it was considered the time was inopportune for the appointment. A vote of thanks was passed To Mr. G FT. Buckeridge, secretary, for his work 10 new members being'elected as a, result of his activities" GENERAL. The County Council lias decided to build premises in Eltham, and it is undestood the site will be in Stanners Street and the price £125 The offices will be in concrete, and plans are now being prepared, so it sliould not bamanv months before the council are" in their own premises. Brigadier Toomer and other Salvatio* Army officials had a great reception here last week, a feature of the evening being the vocal items l>y the Boys' Rome scholars. One lad, Angus McLeod. delighted all with his solos, whilst another boy, Stevens, pleased his audiences with recitations delivered with dramatic effect. Brigadier Toomer, in the course of an interesting address, touched on the value of" the Salvation Army work at Rotorua.
