Barnes (a member of the War Cabinet) says it ia unlikely that the Allies will jointly reply to the Austrian peace note. —Reuter. "OFFER~STILL OPEN." ■ Received Sept. 22, 5.5 p.m. Amsterdam, Sept. 21. A Vienna official message acknowledges the rejection of the Austro-Hungarian peace suggestion. After criticising Mr. Balfour's speech in that connection, the message laconically concludes that the Austro-Hungarian offer is still open.— Reuter. ; GERMANY'S REPLY Received Sept. 22, 5.5 p;m. * Amsterdam, Sept. 21, The German reply to Austria's note was handed in yesterday. It expresses the German Government's hope that the step will meet with success, Though the reception of previous attempts liad not been encouraging, Germany is ready to take part in the proposed exchange of views.—Aua, and N.Z.
