AGAINST TWO TAXI-DRIVERS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auokland, August 18. As a sequel-to %he dwtfchs ofJohn Patton, a tramway worker, who' was knock-, ed down by a motor-car in Khyber Pass on August 12, S. Carey and Rupert J. Morris, drivers of the two ears involved, were charged at the Police Court to-day with manslaughter. Sergeant Mathews gave evidence that on the way to the morgue Carey said: "The worst of it, I was on my wrong side. There was an obstruction on. the other side, and I could not get through." Witness measured the space between the obstruction thrown up by a tramway gang and the kerbing, and found it 9Jft. It was 80, yards fronj the spot where bloodstains were to where it was alleged Carey had turned his car. Accosted, he said* lie had passed the obstruction at 9 thai morning, just missing a man crossing the track. Carey denied that he was travelling at 30 miles an hour. Morris stated that he went on the wrong side of the road because there was a cart on the other side. He did not know there was a car following The other witnesses stated that th«y saw two cars travelling at a high speed, in one instance at least, and in the other on the wrong side. One said the first car missed deceased by about a foot. Both pleaded not guilty, and reserved their defence, and were committed for trial.
