HAWERA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The death of Mr. Peter Campbell, a. well known resident of Hawera, occurred at Kaponga on Saturday. From the meagre details to hand, it appears that Mr. Campbell was driving in a spring-dray on the Lower Rowan Road. On the way towards Mr. White's residence, he met Mr. Pollard, and, after a short conversation, proceeded on his way, When near Mr. Jack Bolger's gate, iu attempted to get into the dray, but th( horse, starting suddenly, caused de ceased to fall between the wheel and tht body of the dray, resulting in serious injuries to his head, death being practical}' instantaneous. The body was found by Miss King shortly after the aceident occurred. The police were immediately communicated with, lint life was extinct before their arrival. An inquest was held on Sunday, when a verdit of accidental death was returned. Deceased, who was CO years of age, leaves a wife and grown-up family. Two sons of deceased, Privates J. and P. Campbell, lost their lives at the front. At the court yesterday, William Holland Makin, alias M'Kinnon, appeared on remand, charged with the alleged theft of a Dodge motor-car from Hawera. On the application of Senior-Serjeant Till, a further remand was granted to enable a witness from Wellington to give evidence. The presiding justice (Mr. W. R. Wallace) fixed bail at accused in £IOO and one surety in a similar amount. Bail was forthcoming.
