THE LATE MR. A. H. AMBURY.

PROPOSED MEMORIAL. '> A well-attended ami representative meeting of citizens, called by Llic Mayor of New Plymouth for the purpose of considering the question of a suitable memorial to the lute Mr. Arthur IT. Am bury, in recognition of his gallantry in attempting to save the lifj of another man on Mount L'gmont on Juno 3, was held at the .Soldiers' Club yesterday afternoon. The Mayor presided, and the Rev. W. A. Sinclair explained what steps had boon taken in the matter. He then moved--"That this meeting of citizens of New Plymouth desires to record its profound admiration of the heroic action of the late Arthur H Ambury, who gave lis own life in attempting to save that of another on Mount Egmont on June 3, 1018." The motion was carried unanimously The Rev. Sinclair then moved—"That it is desirable that: this gallant and selfsacrificing action be fittingly commemorated by the erection of a suitable ;nemorial, or in such manner as may be determined." The resolution was carried, and during; the course of the discussion it was sng-' gested that something in the nature of an enduring monument should be erected on the slopes of Mount Egmon't, with a suitable inscription thereon. The following resolution was then carried:—"That a cairn be erected near the Mountain House, at a place to bo decided upon later, and that sttbscription lists be opened immediately." The hope was expressed that contributions towards the memorial would be made by everyone who desired to perpetuate the memory of so noble a sacrifice, and that tho smallest donations would be welcomed equally with larger amounts. It was resolved that those present should form themselves into a eoimnittee to give effect to the foregoing re-so-lutions, and that a sub-committee, consisting of the following be appointed to obtain all the. necessary information and report to a future meeting:—The Mayor, Messrs W. A. Collis, W. C. Weston, C. Carter, C. G. Bottrill, T. V. Mackay, and tho Rev. W. A. Sinclair. Mr. W. C. Weston was appointed secretary and treasurer. Donations from those present were received as follows:—The Mayor, White and Sons, Mr. A. C. Washer, Mr. and Mrs. Victor Griffiths, Messrs Henry Weston, W. C. Weston, C. Carter, and H. T. H. Grave, £1 Is each; Dr. and Mrs. Walker, £2 2s; Messrs C. G. Bottrill, R. W. D. Robertson, and G. H. Maunder, £1; Messrs V. Duff, G. E. Buckley, Rev. A. C. and Mrs. Sievowright, H. L. Northern, W. S. Cobham, and W. A. Collis, 10s fid; Revs. W. A. Sinclair and H. L. Richards, Messrs R. L. MacdonnJd. A. C. Sievewright, T. V. Mackay, H. Cocker, H. Bullin, and N. Fulton, 10s each. At a subsequent meeting of the subcommittee, it was resolved to ask Messrs Messenger and Griffiths to submit a design of a memorial with specifications and an estimate of the cost, the •chairman and the secretary to supply them with all the necessary details.
