Rowley, registrar of industrial unions, for a declaratory judgment as to whether BeciUm-201 of the Arbitration Act enables an industrial union, consisting of workers in one industry, to amalgamate with a union consisting of workers engaged in tt-ftif* ferent industry, if those industries aro related industries within the meaning of section 24 of the Act.
Sir J. W- Solmand, Solicitor-General, appeared for the registrar, aad Sir John Findlay, KjC., with him Mr. It. Edwards, for the Canterbury Slaughtermen's Union, which was joined! as defendant,
Sir J, W. Salntond said the defendant union was desirous of ajnaJgaansting-with a number of other unions, ajtd applied for amalgamation. The registrar re« fused the application, on the ground that it was not authorised by the section, and the. question at issue was whether a. Union, in order to be amalgamated, mtisfc be engaged in the ' same industry, or whether it was sufficient that its members were engaged in a different though related industry. It was submitted, on behalf of the registrar, that thay must be engaged in the same industry It was argued, on the other aide, that it was sufficient if they were related to each other. He Court reserved its'da* vision.
