FIRES.
CONFLAGRATION AT GORE SEVERAL SHOPS DESTROYED.. By Telegraph.—(Press Association. Gore, Last Night. A disastrous fire occurred at Gore at 5 o'clock this morning. It destroyed practically ail Holland's two-storej-block in Main Street, and the followin" shops were also destroyed: Hamilton (jeweller), Harliwick (fruiterer), Forbes (bookseller), Calder (draper), Edgar Watt (draper), also Miss Barclay (dressmaker), the Gore Returned Soldiers' clubroom, Mrs. Henderson's rooms for private apartments, the' drapery stocks of McGruer and Taylor. The insurances are: Holland's buildings £8000; stocks of tenants: Calder £IOOO, Hamilton £I6OO, Watt £IOOO, Forbes £BOO, McGruer and Taylor £3500. Harliwick, Henderson, Barclay, and the Soldiers' Club were uninsured. The insurance companies affected are the New Zealand, National, Guardian, Standard, Norwich Union, and Commercial Union. J. T. Holland's stock was damaged by water.
The origin of the fire is a mystery. Mrs. Henderson became aware of smoke at an early hour and found the passage full of smoke. The volunteer Tgrigada did excellent work.
