ENEMY RAID FAILS FRENCH PENETRATE EXEMYi ■ LINES. ' PARIS SUBURBS BOMBED. Received May 19, 5.5 p.m. London, May 18. A French communique states:—There was a violent bombardment' during the night in the region of Hailles. We repulsed an enemy raid, in the direction of Mesnils-St. Georges, and took prisoners,, Our detachment penetrated the enemy lines at two points south of Oanjr-Stlr, tJmitz, and brought back .prisoners. Enemy aeroplanes crossed our lines ftnd bombed several places behind our front. Some machines approached Faris, where the alarm was given at 10.32 p.m. and all -were clear at 11.2. Received May 19, *5.5 p.m. Sir Douglas Kaig reports:—"We took a few prisoners in a successful raid in the neighborhood of Beaumont Ha.mel, and rushed a post, northward of Merris, the garrison being killed or driven out. • There was great aerial activity on Thursday, when our aeroplanes dropped 23 tons of bombs on important railway centres, aerodromes, and billets. Fighting was intense early in the morning and in the evening. We brought down thirty enemy machines, and drove down Ave. while anti-aircraft Stins brought down two others. Two hostile machines landed in our lines, the occupants being captured- Five British machined arc missing. Our night-fliers dropped a further 10J trrns nf bombs on the railway stations at Me, Bouai, and Chaulnes. and on billets in the neighborhood of P.iipsuimc. Pernnne, and Poweres. and on the docks ntt Bruges. The enemy's night-fliers were also active. A Gotha landed behind our lines, arid the crew were taken prisoners. Tn reference to the Saarbrucken raid on May 1(1, three l hostile machines Were driven down, riot Ave-—Aus.-N.Z. Oalble Assoc. and Reuter.
HEAVY GERMAN GUNFIRE ENDS IN SMOKE., SEVERE AIR FIGHTING.

The United Press correspondent states that a heavy German concentration of gunfire this morning, in the neighborhood of Hinges and Pacaut Wood, seemed to foreshadow a local attack, but, after the British retaliated with a few rounds of rapid Are, the enemy thought better of it. The weather is unusually warm, with brilliant sunshine. There has been severe air fighting and heavy night bombing.—Press Assoc.
