NEW ZEALAND OFFICER KNIGHTED.

Many congratulatory messages have been received by Lady Cliaytor, of Palmei'ston North, on the high distinction of K.C.M.G. bestowed upon her husband, Major-General E. W. C. Cliaytor, C.8., C.M.G., A.D.C. to the King, N.Z. Staif Corps, commanding the Anzac Mounted Division in Palestine. This confirms the announcement made by Brigadier-General Sir Robert Anderson, chairman, at the proceedings of the Defence Expenditure Commission on Friday.

Major-General Sir E. W. C. Chaytor is a son of Mr J. C. Chaytor, of Marshlands, Marlborough, and became identified with the Marlborough Mounted Rifles, being appointed captain in 1892. He served in the South African AVar from IDOC to 1902, being in charge of the 3rd New Zealand Contingent from May 19th to 26th, 1900, when he was severely wounded, and in command of the 2nd Regiment, Bth New Zealand Contingent, from March 19th, 1902. In December, 1910, he was appointed Officer in Command of the Wellington Military District, with headquarters at Palmerston North—a position which he held until July 16th, 1914, when ](£ was appointed Adjutant-General to the New Zealand Defence Forces. He had only held this latter post for a few weeks when the present war broke out, and he joined the Main Body of the Expeditionary Force as Assistant Adju-tant-General, sailing in October, 1914. He served with the N.Z.E.F. in Egypt and on Gallipoli, where he was wounded, fn 1915 ho received the C.B. for his services, and in 1916 the C.M.G, When Major-General Sir A. H. Russell was given command of the newly-formed New Zealand division in Egypt, Colonel Chaytor, with the rank of BrigadierGeneral, took over the command of the New Zealand Mounted Rifle Brigade, which was incorporated in the Anzac Mounted Division, under Major-General Channel, the distinguished Queensland soldier. The Anzac Mounted Division ever since has performed notable work in the Sinai Desert and in Palestine, putting up some of the finest achievements have been recorded in the present war. In April, 1917, General Channel was promoted to a higher post, and was succeeded in his command by the New Zealander commander, who was promoted Major-General. During the past twelve months the Anzac Mounted Division, under its new chief, has still further enhanced its reputation, and it is considered that it is on this account that General Chaytor lias been further honoured. The honour lias been well earned. General Cliaytor was wounded for the second time in the present war while serving in Sinai. He wears the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers' Decoration.
