TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The Ashburton County Club's Autumn meeting takes place to-day. Fields do not promise to be large, and the stakes offered should have attracted a better class of horses. Only half a dozen have been paid up for in the Asfoburton Cup, of 400 sovs, ru n over a mile and a quarter. Adjutant is topweight with 8.13, and would only require to be well to hold the moderate opposition safe. H. Young, who is riding Clifford's horses <it the meeting, will have the mount. The only other one fancied is Kilboyne, who is nicely weighted with 7.11. However, Adjutant should start favorite. Eleven remain in the Grove Farm Handicap, but scratchings may reduce the field considerably. Gamecock, who has hee n galloping well lately, appears to lie daintily treated with 7.11, though Killjoy will have plenty of followers. Tn tho minor events, Jeannot. Missouri, Silver and Black, and Gay Lad may give si good account of themselves. Battle Eve has been showing signs of soreness lately, and may not be seen at liis best at Ashburton." Nita and Marto n were sent over two rounds of the big fences at Wanganui «n Tuesdav morning. Both fenced well, hut the mare showed to greater advaninse. Unfortunately, she has a cracked lieel, but if she remains sound enough *o start at the Wanganui meeting she should run well. Sleight of Hand wfis withdrawn from nil Wanganui engagements at i n.jn on Tuesday. \ r ' Reformation, a stable-mate of (Sleight "f Hand and Nita, was jumped on Tues•lav, but he has a lot to learn before lie will carrv "Moturoa's" five bob. " Weights for tiiie Wanganui Winter Meeting are due to-morrow. Fgmout Park has been taken up again l'v J. Thorpe, and looks all t he better tor a few months' spell. Client has now won five Cutis. He was twice siwessful in tihe Wansmmii ■uip, and also won the Manawatu Hawke's Bay, and Marton Cups. There is something in owning horses if they are of the right kind. Mr. T. H. Lowry's stake winnings on the New Zealand turf during the past three seasons amount to £47.01)7. and with his Australian winnings the total is £51,262. This season Mr. Lowry is well clear of the other winning owners with £10.3*5. which has been won as follows :_F,stland £3535, Desert Gold £3l<lo. Finmarir £,Ufi.s, KiHowen £Ol5 ><l Kilhope £75. Waimntoa has wo n six rases this senson, his stake winnings touching £IB7O. Hyinesrtra has proved a cheap horse for Mr. Kemiball, who has'sot hi s money hack in seven months. Hvmestra has won five races, and has been in second place once this season, and his total winnings to date are £2623. There is some talk of Parisian Diamond being raced in Sydney next spring. Messrs Riddiford Tiros, are also taking a team across. If Menelaus is sent over he should pay his way. Thus a Sydney paper:—An owner who patronises pony courses sent his nag out at Warwick Farm to decide whether matrimony would take place at once or be postponed. It was all up. The nag just managed to get there in the last stride.
