APOLOGY SOUGHT.
DEMAND ON A MAYOR. SOME REMARKS ABOUT ENGLISH WOMEN. Ohristehurch, May 7. To-night & deputation appointed by Monday's meeting waited on the Mayor with regard to certain remarks he is alllcgcd to have made at Amiberley reflecting on the English wives of New Zealand soldiers. The deputation was headed by Mrs. M&lhieson, who read to Mr. Holland ft resolution passed at the meeting calling on him to apologise. Mr. Holland thanked the deputation for bringing the matter before him. Mr. Morrison, the man on whom the meeting lutd .based its demand, waa of a fairly excitable temperament, and the meeting was entirely beholden to his account of what really had been said. The Mayor explained that his Anifoerley remarks had been addresssed entirely to soldiers leaving the Dominion who were engaged to New Zealand girls, as he knew of cases where New Zealanders had been unfaithM to their New Zealand sweethearts and had brought back as their wives the silly little factory girl typs of woman. He had said nothing against English women, whom he adfnired and respected. Mrs. Mathieson said they must report the Mayor's explanation to another meeting.
