Bennetts; Gtago, E. B. Izard. The conference has concluded. JEALOUSY OVER LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL APPOINTMENTS. Greymouth, May 4. Public opinion -is aroused over the appointment of members of the Legislative Council for the West. Coast in that two residents of the Westland electorate have been selected, whilst the Grey electorate is overlooked. It is pointed out that the Grey district is larger in population and in point of industrial importance. The objection is not on personal grounds. BALLOT OF WAIKATO NATIVES. Wellington, May 4. The first ballot in the Native Expeditionary Force to First Division Maoris resident in the Waikato and Maniapoto districts has taken place, and two hundred names were drawn from a roll containing 420 names. The Gazette containing the names of the selected men will be published next week. The First Division men in the Native Reserve are a small proportion of the total number of Maoris of military age, owing to the custom of early marriages which prevails among the Maoris. The Second Division list for the Waikato and Maniapoto districts contains more than twice as many named as the First Division list. A LIGHTHOUSE DAMAGED. Dunedin, May 4. Representation to the Public Works Department that Dog Island lighthouse needed examination led to a visit of inspection, when it was discovered that the lighthouse has been structaally damaged by lightning stroke some time ago. Mr. Mackenzie, district engineer, prepared a scheme for building an outside casing of reinforced concrete to the entire height of nearly a hundred feet. The work is proceeding as expeditiously as possible under difficult circumstances.
