COMPENSATION CASE. By Telegrapu-—Press Associatioj. Wellington, May 2. Private advice from Melbourne states that the Supreme Court there has given judgment for £OBSO in the case brought by Charles Falkner, James Oomtts, Henry Barnes, George Jones, and Thos. Anderson, Auckland watersides, claim ing damages of £B3OO from Nischier and Co,, for injuries received J»y the effusion of sulphuric acid from a drum on hoard the Monowai in Auckland, in September, 1016, which was due, it was alleged, to the negligent method of closing the drum adopted by the defendants who shipped it. Mr. P- T. O'fiegan, barris ter, of Wellington, represented plaintiffs, RAETAHI FIRE RELIEF. Wellington, May 2. As assistance to the sufferers by the Raetihi fires, Cabinet has authorised the provision .by way of loan up to £75,000 with interest at 5 per cent. The loan will be for 32 years, with the right to borrowers to repay a portion of the whole at the earliest period. Cabinet has also granted a subsidy of £IO,OOO by way of £ for £ subsidy on the subscriptions raised. BIG FIRE AT PAHIATUA. Pahiatua, May 2. A fire early this morning completely destroyed the Kosy confectionery and refreshment premises occupied by A. W. Irvine. Irvine was absent at the time, and his family and two young women, who were sleeping upstairs, escaped in their nightdresses. F. Hedge's adjoining jewellery shop suffered considerably. The Kosy and Hedge's shop are insured for £2OOO, Hedge's stock for £IOOO, and the contents of the Kosy for £#o. The buildings are owned by Mrs. David Crewe.
