THE WAR LOAN.

NEW PLYMOUTH BOROUGH COUNCILS RESOLUTION.

At last night's meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council the question of assisting in raising tlie balance of the war loan was raised by a letter from the Minister of Finance to the Mayor. The Mayor moved: That the public of New Plymouth be earnestly requested to render every assistance in raising t.lie (11/, millions war loan, contributing to the limit of their means, and by inducing their friends nnd neighbors to do likewise.

He said that last year public meetings had been held, but he did not thing such were necessary now, as everybody should realise what the need was. The Mother Country had been holding lip her end in a wonderful way. New Zealand had undertaken certain obligation?, and she should carry them out. (Hear, hear.) It was not only the big men who should contribute—every small contribution of £5 would help the loan. The forger number of small contributors would indicate a wider interest in the loan.

Cr. Short seconded the motion, which was carried.

Cr. Browne said ho thought it was up to the council to give a lead in the matter, and moved that it be an instruction to tho council's sinking fund commissioners to invest any funds available in the

war loan. Cr. Griffith seconded the motion.

Cr. Collis, one of the commissioners, said that all the money available last year had been invested in the war loan, and they had actually anticipated sinking fund revenue tu the'end of the financial year in order 10 make the contribution as large as possible, and a sum oi nearly £101)0' was invested.

Jll view id' Cr. Collis' explanation UlB motion was withdrawn.
