A largely-attendud meeting' wa's held last night to discuss the question of ac. celerating the rate of progress of the Otira Tunnel works. Anion;,' those present wore representatives from most of the local bodies in Canterbury, also from the West Coast. The mooting resolved to urge the Government and members of Parliament that from motives of economy an immediate attempt should be made to speed the finish of the Otira tunnel and open it for railway traffic at the earliest possible moment, thus turning the Midland railway from a heavy annual financial burden into a revenue-earning concern. ,It was also resolved to urge the (Government immediately to take in lrand the procuring of the necessary electric power for the working of the tunnel traffic.
