SIR ERNEST SHACKLETON.
(From Our Own Correspondent). Wellington, Feb. 11'. Sir Ernest Shackleton, who has sent a message to the people of New Zealand on tlie anniversary of his return from tile Antarctic with the rescued members of his expedition last year, is at present in South America on a special ..mission [for the Imperial Governmfeht. Just I what that mission is has not' been repealed, but there is reason to believe that Sir Ernest has turned from the I polar regions to make an expedition into fields of diplomacy- He is regarded as ja great Englishman by the people of South America, who got to know him in 1916, when lie was just back from the IWeddell Sea, and it was said then that i lie was the best ambassador the Empire could have in that part of the world. There arc still important states in South America hesitating on the brink of,war with the Germans.
