V.C. HEROES. A NEW ZEALANDER'S DARING. London, Jan. 11. Eighteen more Victoria Crosses have been awarded, including one to Private Tlenry James Nicholas, a New Zealander, for conspicuous .bravery and devotion to duty in an attack. Nicholas belongs to a Lewis gun section ordered to form a defensive (lank to the right of an advance which was subsequently checked by an enemy strong point. Nicholas rushed forward alone and shot the officer in command of the strong point, and overcame the garrison of sixteen men by means of bombs and bayonet, capturing four wounded prisoners and the machinegun practically single-banded an 4 saving, many casualties. Subsequently, when the advance reached the limit, Nicholas collected the ammunition undert-heavy machine-gun and rifle lire. His exceptional valor and coolness throughout the operations was an inspiring example to (A Wellington press message states that the only soldier named Henry James Nicholas in Base Records is 24,'213, Ist Battalion Canterbury Infantry, son* of Mr. R. Nicholas, Berry Street, St. Albans, Christelnirch. He is 2$ years of age, and was a carpenter before enlisting.
COOL STORAGE EXTENSION. £8.30,000 TO BE EXPENDED. INCREASE OF INSULATED TRUCKS. Received Jan. 13, 5.5 p.m. London, Jan. 12. The Treasury lias granted £830,000 for co]il storage extension at ports, including Devonport, Manchester, Liverpool, Cardiff, and Bristol, the aim being t.o increase the frozen produce reserves in Britain from six weeks to twelve weeks' supply. There are only SOOO tons of insulated rolling-stock in Britain out of 50,0Q0' covered railway meat-carrying cars. The authorities propose immediately to insulate 20,000 meat-carrying vans, which will be sufficient for twenty full-sized meat supples.
