ANTARCTIC HERO SINKS SUBMARINE. The circumstances in which the D.S.O, w&s granted to Lieutenant-Commander Frank Worsley, late of the Shae.kleton Antarctic Expedition, are narrated in a letter here from the High Commissioner. Lieutenant-Commander Worsley, who is | a New Zealander, was navigating commander of Sir Ernest Shackleton's ship, the Endurance, and shared with the leader of the expedition the perils of the wonderful relief journey after the vessel had been crushed by the ice in the Weddell Sea. He came to New Zealand with Sir Ernest Shaeklton in connection with the relief expedition to the Ross Sea, and th«n hurried to England to take service with the Admiralty. "A New Zealander named Worsley commanded a submarine, and was sent to take care of an oil steamer," writes the. High Commissioner. "Accompanying him was a British destroyer. The weather, which was bad, increased to great violence during the night, and he lost the d'estroyer. In the morning a German submarine was encountered, which launched a torpedo. The noise made by the storm was so loud that Commander Worsley did not hear the torpedo strike the ship, but he saw her settling down. He shipped round, discovered the submarine, and immediately sent her to the bottom. The only member of the German crew saved was the commander, whom he took on board, then took the oil steamer in hand, and brought* her safely to port."
