Stephenson. The whole arrangements of the function were carried out with the characteristic thoroughness for which the Tariki Patriotic Committee is noted, and the decoration of the hall, the exceptionally good tea, and the exceptionally good programme provided were all evidence of untiring effort on tlie part of the members, the ladies of which especially deserve high praise for their part of the work. A feature of tho decoration of the hall which especially appealed to the returned soldiers was the tasteful arrangement of the nikau palms, which came from Mr. C. Therkleson's farm., The lining of the hall, recently carried out by local working bee, is a great improvement, and many favorable comments were passed an both the work and the generosity of the anonymous donor of the materials, a very large item, including the new lighting. After full justice had been done to the recherche repast provided, the concert commenced, and the hearty applause which greeted the efforts of the performers showed that the audience fully appreciated the excellence of the individual items. The chairman (Mr. A. E. Laurence), in the course of a short speech on behalf 0 f the Tariki residents, extended a hearty welcome home to the returned soldiers, and expressed the hope that the day was not far distant when the war would end and we should have the great joy of welcoming all our boys back, again. (Applause.) At the request of the chairman, Mr. T. E. Haraerton addressed the audience, speaking as one who had seen active service in the past, and eulogised those who had so nobly given their lives for their country, and expressed his opinion that no man could wish to meet death more gloriously than to fall in battle facing the foe. Private Stephenson thanked the people of Tariki for the hearty welcome they had given them, and spoke enthusiastically of the good work done by the Y.M.C.A. in France, especially with regard to /the "buckshee" refreshments, which are served from huts and dugouts right up,to the firing line. (Applause.) Amongst those ladies who were prominent in carrying out the arrangements for the evening were Mesdames Easan, C. Young, Hoskin, Jemison, F. Bileyf and the Misses Coutts and I. Therkleso'n. The concert party consisted of Mrs. Massey and the Misses Sheehan, Craig, E. and G. Leech, and Messrs Kanford brothers and J. Sutherland, who, on the motion of the chairman, were accorded~a very hearty rote of thanks. There were a number of visitors from Inglewood district; who arrived in cars provided by Mr. Newton King. After the concert, which concluded with a hearty rendering of the National Anthem, the younger members of the audience cleared the hall and finished a very enjoyable evening with th» visual terpsichorean Stunts., Good luck to 'em!
