WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent). Waitara, Oct. 18. At the annual meeting of the Fire Brigade held on Tuesday night the following officers were elected for the coming year: Captain and treasurer, C. Limmer; lieutenant, G. McGrath; foreman, W. Lehndorf, secretary, C. Blanchard. lhe skating carnival iu connection with the business baby held on Tuesday night was most successful. There were a fair number in fancy dress. Several competitions took place and were keenly contested for. The baby's feeding bottle was well filled as the result. Saturday will bo the big day for Waitara. The business baby committee are running a Maori day and the freezers a parcels day. In both cases there should be good business as value will be given for all money expended. In another column the advertisement in reference to next Monday's fixture appears. A perusal will show that a good day's enjoyment is being provided. The latest bulletin exhibited at Everybody's pictures in Waitara on Wednesday night showed that already over quarter of a million votes }iad been recorded, and this is not inclusive of the receipts of the gala day at Urcnui, which .when received will vastly increase the total. No doubt all other of the committees have a lot to tell us about yet and the surprises on Monday night may be interesting. The board at present shows—Free2crs 100,000, Business 67,3-20, Country North 61,200, Country West 50,9C4, total 27'9,454. This represents £1164 10s 4d in cash. After to-day there will be no public notice given of any results received until they are screened at the Theatre Royal on Labor night, Monday next. Waitara, Oct. 18. The number of Votes for the Country West baby has increased from 50,964 to 52,998, the total votes being 281,518, and the value £11i72 19s lOd. The freezers' ball will be repeated tonight for the benefit of the young fry. On the last occasion a very jolly evening was spent by them and their parents, and the same may be looked forward to again to-night. A parcel of votes was posted at Urenui on Tuesday in time for t'he mail on that date, but did not reach the returning officer until Wednesday morning, and therefore are not included in the above count. Word was received yesterday by Mr. O. Bernsten that his son, known as "Barney" to footballers, -Was amongst the wounded in the last affray. His many friends sincerely hope ib is not of a j serious nature. There were a number of visitors from outside Waitara in town yesterday "inspecting the arrangements for the freezers' ball that took place in the evening, and the expressions of opinion were good to hear.
